Early Common Militia Waist Belt Plate, ca. 1825-1835

Gilt die-struck rolled brass plate with applied brass tongue. One of several similar designs differing in only minor die variations. The stars are either 5 or 6 points and the arc of 13 or 17 stars overhead. The eagle with shield on breast was patterned after the Armyís 1821 cap insignia while the modified sunburst and national motto ribbon were general militia symbols during the 1820ís and 1830ís. Eagle is facing the olive branch.
